The Lagos State Government on Tuesday harped on food safety and consumers’ well-being at the 2025 Food Safety Workshop.
To boost consumer protection and strengthen food industry standards, stakeholders across Nigeria’s food value chain gathered for the workshop held in Lagos, in collaboration with DIDONI Company Limited.
Under the theme, “Food Safety First: Protecting Consumers, Empowering Industries,” the event brought together policymakers, regulatory agencies, manufacturers, food scientists, public health experts, and business leaders to address rising concerns around food quality, safety practices, and regulatory compliance.
Declaring the workshop open, the Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, emphasised the urgency of ensuring safe food systems in both formal and informal sectors.
He noted, “Food safety must be central to our health and industrial policies. Protecting the public from food-borne risks is not negotiable, and it requires collaboration across all levels — government, private sector, and consumers.”
Mojola commended DIDONI for partnering with the state in the quest to build a resilient and safety-conscious food industry, adding that Lagos remains committed to creating a robust regulatory environment that empowers industries while safeguarding consumer health.
In an interview, the Chief Executive Officer, DIDONI Company Limited, Adekola Joseph, echoed similar sentiments.
“When food is unsafe, lives are at risk, economies suffer, and consumer confidence is eroded,” he said.
He said the workshop was a clarion call for stakeholders to place food safety at the core of their operations.
The workshop featured panel discussions and technical sessions with stakeholders focusing on best practices in food processing and packaging.
Participants shared real-world experiences and case studies, underlining how lapses in food safety could lead to product recalls, legal liabilities, and reputational damage.
