UN Forces Deep Cuts to Sudan Health Services Amid Funding Crisis, Spokesperson Says

June 23, 2025 (UNITED NATIONS) – The United Nations warned on Monday that severe funding shortfalls are crippling the humanitarian response in Sudan, forcing the closure of dozens of health facilities as hunger deepens and conflict escalates, particularly in the besieged city of El Fasher.

U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the impact of the cuts was severe, highlighting that the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) has been forced to withdraw support from more than half of the 93 health facilities it was assisting across the country.

“This major gap in resources is putting critical services and safe spaces for women and girls at risk,” Dujarric told reporters, noting that UNFPA has received just a quarter of the funding it needs for the year.

The pullback in health services comes as nearly 25 million people in Sudan are estimated to be acutely food insecure. The World Food Programme (WFP) reported that the average cost of a local food basket has surged by 14% since April and is now 113% higher than in May of last year, pushing millions deeper into hunger.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation on the ground continues to deteriorate, mainly in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, which has been under siege for over a year.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 1,200 people fled El Fasher town and the nearby Abu Shouk displacement camp between June 18 and June 21 alone. This adds to the more than 400,000 people displaced from the area since an escalation of hostilities in April this year.

“Those who have been newly displaced have reportedly moved to other parts of the locality of El Fasher, where active conflict and severe access constraints continue to hamper us and our partners from reaching those in need,” Dujarric said.

The U.N. reiterated its call for all parties to the conflict to ensure the safety of aid workers and provide unhindered access to civilians in need.
